Featured Speaker at the ARTAS Users Meeting

Top Hair Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Alan J. Bauman, Was Featured Speaker at the 2016 ARTAS Users Meeting

Nationally recognized hair transplant surgeon and hair loss treatment pioneer, Dr. Alan J. Bauman, was a featured speaker at Restoration Robotics’ 2016 ARTAS Users Meeting.

The meeting, which took place February 19-20 at The Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, CA, was aimed at educating physicians and surgeons on how the ARTAS system can help deliver the best clinical advances for improved patient outcomes during minimally invasive FUE-style hair transplantation.

The invitation to be a featured speaker came after Dr. Bauman, an FUE hair transplant pioneer, recently began offering ARTAS robotic-assisted hair transplants at his Boca Raton clinic, Bauman Medical Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center, the world’s largest stand-alone clinic dedicated exclusively to treating hair loss in men and women.

While the technology itself has only been operational a few months, the decision to add the ARTAS system to Bauman Medical had been in the works since well before Bauman’s new facility was completed in 2014, when he had a state-of-the-art private procedure room designed and constructed specifically for robot-assisted hair transplant surgery.

“As a surgeon who’s performed FUE no linear scar hair transplantation for more than 15 years, we’ve been following ARTAS’ progress for years, and have been continually impressed at how rapidly they are advancing the field,” explained Dr. Bauman.

“It was a great honor to speak to my colleagues on our experience with the ARTAS system, which has been overwhelmingly positive, and great to learn about the exciting advances and upgrades to the system that will be rolled out soon.”

Jim McCollum, President and CEO of Restoration Robotics, was on hand at the conference to welcome guests, and discussed their vision of ‘changing the world for those with hair loss’ and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to collaboration, clinical excellence and innovation.

Attendees then spent two days learning from presentations that included everything from the latest developments in robotic hair restoration, to clinical excellence tips and tools, and innovation for the future.

Dr. Bauman’s presentation, “Why I Added ARTAS to My Practice,” gave insight on his practice’s specific Innovation Strategy and focused on how the addition of the ARTAS system will continue to enable Bauman Medical to help their patients achieve their hair restoration goals effectively and efficiently.

“The ARTAS system, and its many benefits, is in line with our patient-centered mission and philosophy,” explained Dr. Bauman. “We’ve verified evidence of its performance, and have received positive feedback from patients. It has been a win on all fronts for us.”

Dr. Bauman has long been a pioneer of minimally invasive hair transplant procedures; since 2001, Dr. Bauman and his team have transplanted nearly two million FUE grafts.

In 2008 he became the first ABHRS-certified hair restoration physician to routinely use NeoGraft FUE for hair transplantation.

Dr. Bauman was present at the launch of the ARTAS hair transplant robot in Anchorage, Alaska in 2011, and has followed the technology over the last few years including site visits to ARTAS clinical research locations and the Restoration Robotics headquarters in Silicon Valley, in preparation for adding an ARTAS robot to his Bauman Medical practice.

As hair loss sufferers become more familiar with FUE, the ARTAS technology, and the benefits of it, Dr. Bauman expects to see more patients elect for robotic-assisted hair transplants.

“There is still a lot of educating that needs to happen, at both the physician and consumer level,” he asserted. “But it is safe to say this technology is going to be a huge step forward in helping men and women win the battle against hair loss.”

But as revolutionary as this technology is, it is still only as good as the physician operating it. “Some people have the misconception that the ARTAS robot is operating on it own, when in reality, the robot is simply an extension of the surgeon,” Dr. Bauman affirmed.

The ARTAS Robotic System is the product of nearly a decade of research and development by Restoration Robotics in collaboration with some of the most respected leaders in hair restoration medicine.

“Therefore, its effectiveness is tied directly to the expertise, clinical judgment and artistic ability of the surgeon.”

While ARTAS-assisted transplants make harvesting of the hair follicles more accurate and efficient, Dr. Bauman explained how a skilled surgeon is still the most important element of a successful hair transplant.

Regardless of how the hair follicles are harvested, the critical step for naturalness is the artistry of the surgeon involved. Patients, therefore, should not choose their surgeon based on the tool they use, but more so on their artistic ability.

Key Benefits of ARTAS Robotic-Assisted FUE Hair Transplants:

Minimally-invasive FUE donor harvesting leaves no linear scar

Less restricted, more comfortable recovery compared to linear “strip” surgery

Increased accuracy of FUE graft harvesting with robotic precision and decreased harvesting time means increased survival of harvested follicular unit grafts

Computerized selection of FUE grafts to maximize hair yield and minimize donor area usage

More accurate and efficient harvesting of grafts from the sides of the scalp

More accurate and efficient harvesting of grafts in patients with atypical hair characteristics and certain ethnic patients

Increased accuracy in creating recipient sites between existing hair follicles minimizes risk of trauma to existing hair

The ARTAS Robotic System is the product of nearly a decade of research and development by Restoration Robotics in collaboration with some of the most respected leaders in hair restoration medicine.

After rigorous testing in clinical trials, the ARTAS Robotic System received 510(k) clearance from the FDA in 2011.
