“Both women and an increasing percentage of men are constantly looking for the best tactics to care for their hair,” says Ken Robson, founder of The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “Unfortunately, despite the many hair care strategies that encourage growth and maintain healthiness, it comes down to the everyday mistakes people make unknowingly that can cause damage or even hair falling off.”
Robson explains that while there are tons of products out there that help keep hair healthy, but if people are still making these common mistakes, then no product will provide the results they are looking for.
“One of the biggest hair care no-nos is styling the hair when it’s wet,” he states. “The main excuse for this is that the hair sets better when it’s wet, but so many negative repercussions occur when doing this: hair becomes more weak and brittle, making it easier to break, and the gel or other hair care products used to style the hair can attach to the scalp and cause dandruff.”
Robson warns that another mistake is continuing to do the same hairstyle over and over again.
This act can cause parts in the hair to expand or, if the hair is being pulled back on an everyday basis, can even lead to eventual hair loss.
“The next tip is one that may surprise people, but it’s actually not a good idea to use the same shampoo,” he adds. “Hair builds up a resistance to the same shampoo to the point where it stops being effective, so alternating shampoos on a regular basis is a good way to encourage healthy hair.”
“Also, many people make the error of not using a heat protector. This usually comes in the form of a spray,” Robson concludes. “Finally, turn down the heat on a blow dryer. Heat is not good for the hair, which is why we typically suggest not washing hair in hot water.”
