The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) has pivoted from an in-person congress originally scheduled in Panama to a highly interactive and fully engaging virtual congress. The ISHRS Virtual Congress will be held October 17-25, 2020, with in-depth scientific sessions covering a spectrum of the latest topics in hair transplantation.

“In transitioning to a virtual meeting format, we have spread our content over nine days with a well-designed schedule to allow attendees to participate in more sessions and workshops than usual while keeping up with their normal work and home life,” said Bradley R. Wolf, MD, FISHRS, program chair. “The ISHRS World Congress has a strong tradition of hosting the best education from the top minds in the field of hair restoration surgery, and this virtual meeting is no exception.”

One of the meeting highlights will be a hair regenerative symposium featuring several renowned hair researchers. Guest speakers include geneticist Prof. Angela Christiano – recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences – on Hair Follicle Bioengineering using 3D Printing Technology, and Dr Maksim Plikus from the University of California Irvine Stem Cell Research Center on Cell Coordination and Organ Regeneration. Dr Alexey Terskikh, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, La Jolla, Calif., will speak on Hair Regeneration using induced pluripotent stem cells derived from dermal papilla cells with a 3D biodegradable scaffold.

Another meeting highlight will focus on the humanistic side of medicine, as the doctor-patient relationship is vital to proper clinical care and better outcomes. Dr Danielle Ofri of New York University School of Medicine will share her thoughts on “What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear.” A physician and author, Dr Ofri has given TED talks on this topic.

The robust congress includes eight live general sessions, nine live focused sessions with a follow-up “Fireside Chat,” over 60 on-demand presentations on a variety of cases, studies and innovations plus live discussion groups to allow conversations with the authors of these presentations. New this year are several industries thought leader symposia whereby knowledge experts from various companies servicing the hair transplantation field can share their wisdom and science behind their products. There will be an exhibit hall, awards ceremony, as well as several surprises for attendees.

“This will not be a typical Zoom meeting. Hair Restoration Surgeries Jumped 60% Worldwide

Hair restoration surgery is having a moment, according to results released today of a new member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

The worldwide volume of surgical hair restoration procedures performed from 2014 to 2016 rose 60 percent, with 635,189 procedures performed in 2016.

“Like other forms of cosmetic surgery that can boost self-confidence and self-image, people increasingly are more open to talking about having hair transplantation and with that word is spreading how one can achieve permanent, natural-looking results with this proven surgical procedure,” said Ken Washenik, MD, PhD, FISHRS, president of the ISHRS. ”

In recent years, we have noticed a surge in physicians registering for our annual congresses to learn the procedure, and some techniques have helped newer physicians to the field perform the procedure with greater ease. More educated physicians translates to better results for patients, which I believe is the reason we’re noticing such an increase in the number of procedures taking place.”

Of the 635,189 surgical hair restoration procedures performed worldwide in 2016, Asia led the way with 195,284 procedures, followed by the Middle East with 149,400 and the U.S. with 133,136 procedures.

Overall, the number of surgical, and nonsurgical, hair restoration patients increased considerably from 2014. Specifically, 597,181 surgical patients sought treatment in 2016 (a 67 percent increase from 2014), with 1,241,764 nonsurgical patients treated in 2016 (a 78 percent increase).

While worldwide economic growth remained relatively flat in 2016, the estimated worldwide market for surgical hair restoration enjoyed a robust increase — from $2.5 billion USD in 2014 to $4.1 billion USD in 2016. This represents a 64 percent increase in market size from 2014 (see the full report for details).

Other notable trends and facts from the ISHRS Practice Census survey include:

In 2016, more than half of both male and female surgical patients worldwide fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old, 59.7% and 59.0% respectively
In 2016, ISHRS members treated a higher percentage of men with surgical hair restoration procedures (85.7%) than women (14.3%)
The Middle East experienced the biggest increase in the number of hair restoration procedures in 2016 — a 163% increase from 2014
From 2014 to 2016, hair restoration procedures performed on the face (moustache/beard) increased 101% worldwide
The Middle East reported the largest number of facial hair transplants (8,537 procedures) in 2016, with Asia a close second (8,376 procedures)

Interestingly, the majority (61.1 percent) of hair restoration patients treated by ISHRS members in 2016 traveled more than 20 miles/32 kilometers for their procedure, including travel to a different state, region or country. Dr. Washenik stressed that patients who decide to travel for a hair restoration procedure need to do due diligence when researching and deciding on their surgeon, as the ISHRS has witnessed a black market spawning from non-doctor clinics illegally performing the procedure under the auspice of medical tourism.

“In some countries, we are hearing horror stories of patients who receive poor growth, poor results and often permanent damage to their scalps at the hands of unlicensed technicians who are operating hair restoration clinics illegally,” said Dr. Washenik. “While there are many qualified, ethical physicians in these countries who produce good results, others who operate illegal clinics entice unknowing consumers with cheap prices and promises of guaranteed results.”

The world of hair transplants and restoration is filled with methods and terminology such as grafts, strip harvesting and follicular unit extraction.

These techniques and procedures have been in use for many years and are among the most commonly employed methods of helping patients suffering from hair loss.

While Dr. Parsa Mohebi, M.D. has utilized many of these methods over the years, he also keeps an eye on the future by spotlighting a few of the unconventional and experimental methods currently being researched and implemented across the country.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) comes from the blood of a patient and it contains both platelets and growth factors. As of now, there is no widespread method of hair cloning currently in use.

The final experimental method Dr. Mohebi spotlights is gene therapy for hair loss treatment. Multiple therapies that aid with wound repair suggest a connection exists between hair growth and wound healing.

Initial results are promising but Dr. Mohebi says more research needs to be done before gene therapy achieves widespread use on human patients.

According to Dr. Mohebi, it is important to look to the future of hair transplantation. Dr. Mohebi goes on to say that “the field of hair transplantation is constantly growing.

New techniques and treatments are being researched as well as implemented by doctors on a regular basis. Some of the new techniques are based firmly in the world of science and are researched and tested.

Dr. Susan M. Stuart is partnering with Dr. Richard Chaffoo as a dermatologist and plastic surgeon “dream team” to offer men and women a distinct approach for diagnosing and treating hair loss in the La Jolla and greater San Diego area.

Dr. Stuart says hair loss is a relatively common problem with a variety of underlying causes that she has experience working with as a dermatologist and skin care specialist.

“Hair loss can be so distressing for both male and female patients,” she says. “It’s important to me to go over each patient’s history to determine what’s contributing to the hair loss. For men and women, hair loss is often hereditary. Nevertheless, whatever the cause, it’s vital to reach an accurate diagnosis and establish an effective treatment plan.”
