Miss America Finalist Opens Up About Hair Loss

Kayla Martell hair lossFor women, it’s their identity. It gives them a sense of femininity. In beauty pageants, it’s one of the many things people associate*with the process.

That’s hair. And a whole lot of it.

So to be a bald beauty queen? Well, that’s just unheard of, right? Not exactly.

Kayla Martell is a former Miss Delaware and Miss America finalist, and she’s currently traveling across Siouxland to talk about her condition.

Alopecia Areata is what it’s called. Essentially, it’s unexplained hair loss in an otherwise very healthy person. Kayla was diagnosed at the age of 11, but was still determined to walk across the stage in the Miss Delaware pageant, one day. And she did. Bald. And then two times over.

She recalls, “After my third time competing, my best friend was crowned Miss Delaware and watching her get crowned was incredible. Walking off the stage, though, a judge came up to me and shook my hand and congratulated me on making the top 10, and winning the interview award, and a few other things and said, ‘Do you want to be Miss Delware?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I do.’ And he said, ‘You’re gonna have to wear a wig.’ I walked off the stage and I was livid.

How could a man ever understand the strength that it took for me to get up there, bald and be exactly as I was and feel confident enough to brave a pageant where there’s a ton of big hair, with no hair, and I thought, “This is it. I’m done. iI they’re expecting me to change who I am, then I don’t belong here, and I actually planned on not competing that following year. I planned on giving up on it all, at that point.”

But Kayla did try again and eventually won. 2010 was her year, and while she did compete in a wig, she says she truly feels it was her personality and confidence that won the judges over.

Today, she’s an inspiration to other young girls out there that are battling the same type of condition. She travels the country, spreading awareness about Alopecia and all the options that are currently available for women, who too, are struggling with any kind of hair loss or thinning.

Kayla will be the guest speaker at Christoffels & Co. Tuesday, June 3rd, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, during a free hair-loss seminar. All attendees will receive a free and confidential hair and scalp analysis by the experts there, at Christoffels.

Christoffels is located at: 3210 E 26th Street, Sioux Falls, SD, 57103.
