Medical Breakthrough Set to Disrupt Hair Restoration Industry

A world-renowned hair restoration surgeon in California is the first in the nation to perform what is promising to become a game-changing treatment in the hair loss industry. Dr Sara Wasserbauer is part of a revolutionary procedure known as HairClone Follicle Preservation that allows patients who anticipate they might lose their hair in the future to bank hair cells so they can be used for treatments down the road.

“Discoveries in hair biology and preservation have slowly been progressing in the background in our field for years,” says Dr Sara Wasserbauer, Past-President of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. “But now it is all coming together and essentially a whole third branch of hair medicine is opening up before our eyes. 2021 is the year everyone is going to be talking about this new groundbreaking treatment. HairClone Follicle Preservation is going to allow doctors to help more hair loss patients than ever before.”

The first step for this breakthrough concept begins with hair banking, a method to preserve hair follicles when cells are the most active or vibrant. Dr Wasserbauer can surgically remove enough follicles needed for treatment later in life during one procedure and the entire operation takes less than two hours.

“We performed this surgery on patients in Northern California for the first time in 2020,” says Dr Wasserbauer. “The hair follicles we removed are then cryogenically frozen which stops the ageing process of the hair. The follicles are stored in the United Kingdom where tissue banking has been approved by the government. We are hoping the FDA will grant approval to store tissue at United States storage facilities sometime this year.”

WHY CRYOPRESERVATION?

  • Cryopreservation methods reach very low temperatures so any chemical activity in cells is stopped.
  • If thawed correctly, the cells are then able to function normally.
  • Cryopreserving hair is like an “insurance plan” for hair, the hair follicles are essentially frozen in time. The tissue stays viable for at least 20 to 30 years.
  • It is important to preserve hair follicles when the patient is young, so if and when the patient needs treatment, the hair follicles will act as 20-year-old hair instead of 50-year-old hair.

One of Dr Wasserbauer’s first patients was only 18 years old. “He has a family history of serious hair loss which made him a perfect candidate,” explains Wasserbauer. “For the procedure, we only numb an area that is about the length of a finger, then I remove up to 50 grafts for the sample, document the exact number of hairs, what they look like, put the sample in a refrigerated box, then it is shipped to the U.K. where the samples are cryopreserved and banked until needed.”

According to Dr Wasserbauer once the cloning procedure is developed the patient then gets to a point to use the stored follicular units, the hair would need to be tested. “This process must occur at a licensed laboratory where scientists can isolate specific cells in order to examine the hair shaft to see how the hair would grow,” she says. “The cells then grow at the lab where they would divide and multiply rapidly over two to four weeks; this is known as hair multiplication. At that point, the sample is sent back to a surgeon’s clinic where a physician can micro-inject them into a patient’s scalp to produce thicker, more youthful-looking hair that will continue to grow.”

Dr Wasserbauer consults patients at multiple locations in Northern California. In addition to HairClone Follicle Preservation, she conducts a variety of other hair restoration procedures and treatments including follicular unit excision (FUE) follicular unit hair transplantation (FUT), eyebrow hair transplantation, scalp micro pigmentation and laser hair Therapy. She is available for phone and virtual interviews to discuss any or all treatments.

Robotic Hair Transplant System

Robotic Hair Transplant System

Robotic Hair Transplant System Market

Alopecia or hair loss is a chronic dermatology disease in which there is either partial or complete loss of hair from the scalp and other parts of the body. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, approximately 6.8 million people in the United States and 147 million worldwide have developed alopecia at some point in time.

Strong family history is one of the main reasons contributing to pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia in both males and females.

As estimated by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), more than 35 million men in the U.S. currently suffer from male pattern baldness. ARTAS robotic hair transplant systems make the hair translation procedure more effective and less painful.

The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system is a computer-assisted equipment use to improve the quality of follicle. It also enhances the quality of the most challenging Follicle Extraction Unit (FUE).

Various components of an ARTAS robotic hair transplant system are image-guided robotic arm, small dermal punches and a computer interface. The robot is guided by a 3-D imaging software and the cameras. The device removes the hair follicle at a rate of 1,000 per hour.

The FUE procedure involves removing hair from the donor region of the scalp and then implanting it into the recipient site. The separation of the follicular units from the donor tissue is a tedious, repetitive and labour intensive process. The FUE process requires great precision to prevent damage to follicular units.

The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system has significantly increased the accuracy of the FUE procedure. The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system reduces harvesting time and minimizes any damage to hair follicles with its efficacy and great precision. The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system also improves the chances of graft survival. It is also far more comfortable than traditional and more invasive hair restoration processes.

Robotic Hair Transplant System Market: Drivers and Restraints

Increasing prevalence of various dermatological related disorders will drive the robotic hair transplant system market during the forecast period. Unhealthy lifestyle patterns and an increase in stress levels will further contribute towards the growth of hair restoration treatment and robotic hair transplant systems market.

Genetic and other environmental factors increase baldness among men and women. Technologically improved and minimally invasive transplant treatment methods will increase the growth of the robotic hair transplant system market during the forecast period. High adoption among people of young age to enhance their appearance will further fuel the overall market of robotic hair transplant systems.

However, high cost and various side effects associated with the treatment, such as an itchy scalp, hair thinning, etc., might hinder the growth of the robotic hair transplant system market during the forecast period.

Hair Restoration Services Market

Hair Restoration Services Market

The global hair restoration services market was valued at $8,452.5 million in 2018 and is projected to reach $12,119.4 million by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 4.6% from 2019 to 2026. The rise in bald population around the globe has been a major driving factor of the global hair restoration services market.

The global hair restoration services market is segmented based on service type, gender, service provider, and region. On the basis of service type, the market is categorized into follicular unit extraction, follicular unit transplantation, laser treatment, follicular unit strip surgery, and others. In terms of gender, the market is fragmented into male and female. By service provider, it is segregated into hospitals, clinics, and surgery centre.

Over the past couple of years, hair loss has been a rising concern in some of the major parts of the world, specifically in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. As per AMR sources, nearly 50 million men and 30 million women in the U.S. suffer from hair loss. In Europe, the Czech Republic has the highest number of bald individuals, with the male population accounting for more than 50%. Similarly, in India, the majority of the male population especially in their 20s have been tackling with baldness issue. With the rise in concern over hair loss, the consumer seeks relevant solution or treatment on a long-term basis. This one factor has led to increasing in demand for hair restoration services.

Over the last decade, hair restoration services have evolved in terms of technology and efficiency. Several key hair restoration service providers have been strategizing on evolving and improvising their services, which has resulted in increased customer demand for an upgraded version of several hair restoration solutions, specifically follicular unit extraction and follicular unit transplantation.

Many hair restoration patients subject themselves to unnecessary risk, and in some cases, permanent harm, by unknowingly having their procedures done by unlicensed techs who illegally perform surgery, rather than licensed and appropriately experienced professionals. The rogue clinics that facilitate illegal practices have created an expanding black-market hair transplant. Patients around the world are suffering from the unlawful actions of these clinics, which could significantly impair the entire hair transplant industry.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, millennials are on the verge of surpassing baby boomers in the country.

Similarly, in Asia-Pacific, millennials account for a larger population, especially in countries such as China, India, and Australia as compared to other population groups. Moreover, hair loss concerns have been high among the millennials, specifically in North America and Europe. Hence, they consider hair restoration services as a solution on a long-term basis. Thus, the rise in the millennial population is antedated to provide immense opportunity for hair restoration services, in terms of value sales.
