Swoop for Asia-Pacific rights to top-selling anti-dandruff shampoo

Alliance Pharma makes £60mln swoop for Asia-Pacific rights to top-selling anti-dandruff shampoo

Shares in Alliance Pharma rose 3% after it unveiled its latest acquisition – a £60mln deal that adds a fourth ‘star product’ to its expanding medicine cabinet.

It is buying the Asia-Pacific rights to the medical anti-dandruff shampoo Nizoral from Janssen Pharmaceutica, an offshoot of the American giant Johnson & Johnson.

It’s the company’s second major hair care transaction following on from the purchase of Vamousse, a pesticide-free head lice treatment that cost £10mln.

It is funding the latest deal via a placing of more than 37 million new ordinary shares that has raised gross proceeds of £34mln before expenses. The group will draw the rest down from its debt facility.

Earnings enhancing

Last year, Nizoral’s sales in the region, which covers 15 territories including China, Japan, and Korea, were £18.5mln and Alliance estimates this would have generated underlying profits (EBITDA) of £7.1mln.

The new product, which will be the company’s fourth international star brand, is expected to be earnings enhancing in its first full year under Alliance’s ownership.

“Asia-Pacific is Alliance’s fastest-growing region and we are delighted to strengthen the development of our APAC business through this earnings-enhancing acquisition of Nizoral, an excellent brand with a long medical heritage,” said chief executive Peter Butterfield.

The company has grown via a series of well-judged acquisitions and Alliance now owns around 90 pharmaceutical and healthcare products and sells into over 100 countries.

In that portfolio, it has what it calls ‘local hero’ lines, which sell well in a particular territory, or country.

Crown jewels

The crown jewels are its ‘global stars’, which are managed and marketed centrally and, as the name suggests, are sold internationally.

They are the aforementioned Vamousse, Kelo-cote, a scar reduction product and MacuShield, a supplement recommended by eye experts.

A further product could be added to the roster following UK regulatory approval for the morning sickness drug Diclectin.

In an update last month, Alliance said it was seeing “good growth” from Kelo-cote, while its two most recent acquisitions, Vamousse and Ametop, an anesthetic gel, were performing in line with expectations.

The shares rose 3.03p to 102.47p, meaning those taking part in the placing are already sitting on a 13% paper profit.

Significant distribution synergies
On Nizoral, Alliance sees “significant distribution synergies” from adding the shampoos and creams to its existing product portfolio.

The company has regional offices in Singapore and Shanghai, which it said: “will benefit from the enhanced distribution capabilities the Acquisition will bring”.

It also has a “strong and proven” management team in Asia-Pacific that is currently growing the existing business there at greater than 40%.

As well as being earnings enhancing, the deal’s return on invested capital is expected to exceed its weighted average cost in 2019.

Chinese people are losing their hair earlier than ever

Chinese people losing their hair earlier than ever before, research shows

Chinese people are losing their hair earlier than ever before, according to research published in the latest edition of China Newsweek magazine.

In a survey of 4,000 students conducted by Tsinghua University in Beijing in October, almost 60 per cent of respondents were found to be suffering from hair loss to some degree.

About 40 per cent of the people who took part said they had noticed their hairline receding, while 25 per cent said they learned about the problem from friends or family.

The survey found that students from the schools of Marxism and arts were the most likely to have hair loss problems, with mathematics, science and automotive engineering students the least likely, the report said.

While providing only anecdotal evidence, Dr Fu Lanqin, a dermatologist at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing, was quoted as saying that there had been a noticeable increase in the number of young people seeking treatments for hair loss in recent years.

Patients “are losing their hair from the age of about 21 or 22, with the [condition] becoming obvious by 24 or 25” she said.

“[My] feeling is that this generation is losing its hair sooner than previous generations.”

Away from the medical research, consumer data also seems to support the claim.

Online shopping website Taobao said recently that hair loss products were among its top 40 bestselling lines in 2017, with consumers under 30 accounting for more than 40 per cent of sales.

Doctors cited in the China Newsweek article said the increased prevalence of baldness among young people could be due to societal changes.

Neurological factors, such as stress at work or study, insomnia and irregular life patterns were cited in more than 60 per cent of the cases of hair loss, it said.

“People who were born in the 80s or 90s have different concerns,” Zhao Junying, a doctor at Capital Medical University in Beijing, was quoted as saying.

“They are no longer worrying about food or keeping warm. They care more about their appearance. Many young people, especially the unmarried ones, are under great pressure.”

Bald Is Beautiful

Bald Men Perceived As More Attractive

Bald Men Perceived As More Attractive, Dominant, Study Says

According to a new study, bald really is beautiful.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have released the results of a survey that found that men who have shed their hair are more attractive.

The study was composed of three major tests given to students on campus. Male and female students were asked to rate photos of men according to attractiveness, confidence, and dominance.
Some of the photos also digitally removed hair from some of the pictures to show the same person with and without their locks.

According to the researchers, the bald men won out in all three categories. The study also says men who willingly ditch their hair are perceived as more appealing because they’ve gone against the traditional norms associated with hair and vitality.

“Choosing to dispense with one’s hair is arguably a form of nonverbal behavior, a form of expression which communicates information about the self otherwise difficult to observe,” researchers write.

‘‘Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man—there’s your diamond in the rough.’’ — Larry David

The findings also claim that bald men, being perceived as more dominant, will do better in business and economically overall. Based on their study, researchers at Penn also suggest that men beginning to lose their hair just let it happen.

“Instead of spending billions each year trying to reverse or cure their hair loss, the counter-intuitive prescription of this research to men experiencing male pattern baldness is to shave their heads.”

Hair loss not just a mens issue

Hair loss not just a men’s issue: How surgery changed a Valley woman’s life

Almost every woman cares about her hair, and when it’s not right, it can mess with your confidence.

Not too long ago, Ginette Weiner wasn’t happy with her reflection.

“I couldn’t look in the mirror anymore at my hair,” said Weiner.

The 65-year-old woman says time was taking its toll.

“I can live with a few wrinkles, but when I started looking in the mirror and started having balding where I could actually see my scalp on the sides, and my hairline was receding, and my enormous forehead was getting even larger, it made me feel horrible. It made me feel old,” Weiner describes.

Nearly as many women experience hair loss and thinning as men, but not a lot of women are talking about it.

“I don’t know why. Hair loss makes you feel guilty and ashamed as if there’s something wrong with you. People would look at me with a lot of sympathy, but not saying much,” explains Weiner.

She combed through a ton of information and found the answer to her problem.

“I came across Dr. Keene and I was just totally blown away. She’s a bonafide surgeon. She publishes articles. She’s the real deal,” Weiner said.

Dr. Sharon Keene is an internationally-recognized pioneer and highly-regarded expert in the hair transplant industry.

“When a woman has had only a small area of the hairline affected or receding back and if it’s not caused by inflammation, and it’s caused just by the gradual aging process, those are very good candidates for surgery, as are women who’ve had some forms of cosmetic surgery,” Dr. Keene explained.

Dr. Keene transplanted Weiner’s hair from the back of her head to the front along her hairline. For Ginette Weiner, it was a transformation both inside and out.

“It has given me back my life, and I know that sounds extreme, but that is exactly the way I feel,” describes Weiner.

Dr. Keene says women with thinning hair make up 10 percent of her practice at Physician’s Hair Institute in Phoenix and Tucson. She says the embarrassing condition is complicated and can be caused by a number of different factors.

“It can be caused by metabolic abnormalities, hormonal abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, medications. It can be caused by stress, illness, or just a particular emotional stress,” Dr. Keene explained.

She says that’s why surgery can’t help every woman and she warns about quick fixes and false promises from people who are not experts in hair restoration.

“It is a concern to those of us in the field that there are casual clinics popping up, promising to regrow hair for patients.
It’s very important that anyone who is wanting an assessment and wanting to treat their hair loss, go to somebody who’s actually knowledgeable about the field, not simply someone who owns a machine that they can use to redistribute hair.

Dr. Keene says the fallout from these types of clinics is a loss of trust and a waste of time and money.

“I’ve had patients who’ve come to my office and told me they spent thousands of dollars on lasers, and it didn’t do a thing for them. I’m very disappointed when I hear that,” says Dr. Keene.

For women like Ginette Weiner, the right doctor and the right treatment made all the difference in the world.

“I can look in the mirror now. I feel good about my hair. They’re growing like mad. It’s a perfectly natural hairline, and it’s thick. It’s amazing,” said Weiner.
