Alopecia Treatment Market

Alopecia Treatment Market

Alopecia Treatment Market

Alopecia is a term used to describe excessive hair damage under certain medical conditions or dietary issues. A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diets are leading to loss of hair among masses.

Furthermore, ageing and hormonal imbalance, increasing chronic diseases like arthritis, cancer, hypertension, depression also lead to hair loss, especially among the middle-aged population.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, androgenetic alopecia accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men.

Over 800 thousand patients are seeking some kind of treatment for hair loss worldwide.

In recent years, many novel drugs have been approved by the regulatory bodies for the treatment of alopecia and many drugs are in pipeline, which are expected to receive approval in the near future.

Concert Pharmaceuticals Inc. received fast track designation from the United States Food and Drug Administration, (FDA) for its novel product for the treatment of moderate-to-severe alopecia areata in January 2018. The launches of such novel products in the market is expected to drive the global alopecia treatment market growth in the near future.

Key Market Trends

Female is Expected to Hold Largest Share Over the forecast period

About one-third of women experience hair loss (alopecia) at some time in their lives. Among postmenopausal women, as many as two-thirds suffer hair thinning or bald spots. Hair loss in women often has a greater impact than hair loss does on men, because it’s less socially acceptable for them.

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in women. Alopecia can severely affect a woman’s emotional well-being and quality of life.

Although Alopecia is more common in male than female, the female has the largest share in the market owing to the factors such as high awareness levels coupled with increased frequency of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) causing a hormonal imbalance that leads to androgenetic alopecia.

North America Region Holds the Largest Market Share of Alopecia Treatment (Hair Loss) Market

North America dominates the Alopecia Treatment (Hair Loss) market due to the presence of technologically advanced healthcare infrastructure, high disposable income, and availability of novel therapeutics options pertaining to the treatments.

According to the United States National Library of Medicine, Alopecia areata affects 1 in every 500 to 1,000 people in the United States. It is one of many recognized forms of alopecia, alopecia areata is the second most common form after androgenetic alopecia. Alopecia areata affects men and women equally, and it can occur in people of any ethnic background.
Therefore, the high prevalence and the proportionally high treatment rates pertaining to hair loss in the U.S. are high major drivers for the North American market.

Competitive Landscape

Some of the prominent industry players operating in total Alopecia Treatment (Hair Loss) market include Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd., Aclaris Therapeutics Inc., Cipla Inc., Concert Pharmaceuticals Inc., Daiichi Sankyo Inc.

The development of advanced products for better outcomes and rigorous marketing is one of the competitive strategies adopted by the market players. In 2018, HCell Inc., a biotechnology company received orphan drug designation (ODD) for its product from the FDA. Furthermore, in 2017, Perrigo Company PLC. Launched over-the-counter Women’s Rogaine, which helps to regrow hair on top of the scalp.

Vitamin D and Hair Loss

Vitamin D and Hair Loss

Study of serum vitamin D levels in men with premature androgenetic alopecia

Vitamin D deficiency had been associated with various hair loss disorders, such as telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and female pattern hair loss. However, previous studies have not found a correlation between serum vitamin D levels and the severity of androgenetic alopecia.

Methods

A case‐control study was conducted for a period of one year in a public tertiary care hospital.

Fifty males clinically diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and 50 age‐matched healthy controls were recruited. Serum vitamin D levels in both cases and controls were measured by radioimmunoassay technique, and the results were compared.

Results

A total of 50 cases and 50 controls were recruited and analyzed. The mean age of the cases was 23 years and that of controls was 24.2 years. The mean levels of serum vitamin D significantly decreased in cases, compared to controls (20.10 vs. 29.34 ng/mL; P ≤ 0.001).

Eighty‐six percent of the cases had deficiency of vitamin D (<30 nmol/L), while 14% had insufficient vitamin D levels (31–50 nmol/L).

There was a positive correlation between vitamin D deficiency and severity of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), which was statistically significant (P ≤ 0.5). However, there was no correlation between the duration of sun exposure and serum vitamin D levels (2.36 ± 1.2 in cases and 3.23 ± 1.6 in controls, P value = 0.98).

Conclusion

Our study showed a significant correlation between vitamin D deficiency and the severity of androgenetic alopecia.

This suggests that vitamin D may play a role in the premature onset of androgenetic alopecia. However, further studies on a larger population and the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the progression of androgenetic alopecia are required to validate the above findings.

Trial of HST 001 for Androgenic Alopecia

Trial of HST 001 for Androgenic Alopecia

Histogen Announces First Patient Dosed in Phase 1b/2a Trial of HST 001 for Androgenic Alopecia

Histogen Inc, a regenerative medicine company with a novel biological platform that replaces and regenerates tissues in the body, announced today the enrollment of the first patient in its Phase 1b/2a clinical trial of HST 001, the Company’s lead therapeutic candidate for the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men.

This blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-site study will enrol 36 subjects with male pattern hair loss using a 2:1 randomization HST 001 to placebo. It is designed to assess the safety and tolerability of HST 001, as well as indicators of efficacy including non-vellus hair count, total hair count, and hair thickness density as measured by Canfield macrophotography.

“The initiation of this clinical trial is a critical milestone for Histogen following the completion of our merger and listing on the Nasdaq Capital Market last week,” said Richard Pascoe, Chief Executive Officer of Histogen. “HST 001 is a potentially transformative approach to treating androgenic alopecia given that existing therapies focus on reducing hair loss, while HST 001 has the potential to stimulate new long-lasting hair growth.”

Building on prior clinical experience with HST 001, the Phase 1b/2a study will be the first company-sponsored trial to include a third dosing time point, with dosing taking place at week 0, week 6 and week 12.

At each treatment timepoint, subjects will receive 20 injections focused on temporal recession and vertex scalp areas, the most common regions of hair loss in men with androgenic alopecia.

Top-line data is anticipated to be available in the fourth quarter of 2020.

About HST 001

HST 001, or Hair Stimulating Complex (HSC), is intended to be a physician-administered therapeutic for hair loss. HSC is anticipated to be a relatively safe, minimally invasive treatment that promotes new hair growth where existing treatments only reduce hair loss.

HSC is manufactured to enrich for growth factors including KGF, VEGF, and follistatin, which are involved in signalling stem cells in the body and have been shown to be important in hair formation and the stimulation of resting hair follicles.

About Histogen

Histogen is a regenerative medicine company developing patented technologies that replace and regenerates tissues in the body. The company’s innovative technology platform utilizes cell-conditioned media and extracellular matrix materials produced by hypoxia-induced multipotent cells, developing therapeutic products that address underserved, multi-billion US dollar global markets.
