La Jolla Dermatologist & Plastic Surgeon Team Up for Hair Restoration

Dr. Susan M. Stuart is partnering with Dr. Richard Chaffoo as a dermatologist and plastic surgeon “dream team” to offer men and women a distinct approach for diagnosing and treating hair loss in the La Jolla and greater San Diego area.

Dr. Stuart says hair loss is a relatively common problem with a variety of underlying causes that she has experience working with as a dermatologist and skin care specialist.

Hair loss can be so distressing for both male and female patients,” she says. “It’s important to me to go over each patient’s history to determine what’s contributing to the hair loss. For men and women, hair loss is often hereditary. Nevertheless, whatever the cause, it’s vital to reach an accurate diagnosis and establish an effective treatment plan.”

Once the cause of hair loss is diagnosed, Dr. Stuart says, she works in a professional partnership with her husband, triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Chaffoo, to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Practicing out of the same office on the Scripps Memorial Hospital campus, the duo says they aim to provide La Jolla hair restoration and transplant patients with a special continuum of care.

“It’s about meeting both medical and aesthetic needs in a convenient way,” Dr. Stuart explains. “In many cases, a person worried about hair loss might talk to a primary care doctor who then sends them to a dermatologist or a hair transplant surgeon. We feel that we have raised the bar to a new patient standard as patients have the expertise of both a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon.”

After the diagnosis is made, a patient receives an individualized treatment plan specific for the hair loss, whether it is a medical treatment or hair transplantation surgery.

Dr. Chaffoo uses a new technique called NeoGraft. Unlike previous methods of hair transplantation that required removing a strip of flesh from the back of the scalp, the NeoGraft device uses pneumatic suction to gently extract each donor follicle intact.

Dr. Chaffoo and his hair restoration team then place hair follicles into the balding area to recreate a natural and fuller hair line.

This approach to hair transplantation leaves no linear scar. Recovery is short with no visible scars or numbness to the scalp. Patients may wear their hair very short as no one will notice they’ve had hair replacement surgery within a few weeks of a procedure.

“NeoGraft is one of the most revolutionary and exciting services to come to my practice in recent memory,” Dr. Chaffoo says. “It’s completely changed the way we perform hair transplantation, and my patients are over the moon with their results.”

Additionally, Dr. Chaffoo says, patients seem to like the convenience and continuity of care at the joint practice.

“We offer a rather unique setup,” Dr. Chaffoo says. “We offer better care as a team, and patients appreciate how easy the process is when we work together.”
